In the Heart of Slovo: A Story of Hope and Resilience

Deep within the informal settlement of Slovo, a beacon of hope emerged in the form of Thekga Movement, female-led social innovator; Tumi Mphahlele driven by a divine calling. Her mission was clear: to establish a stronghold in the City of Ekurhuleni’s Blesbokspruit, a Ramsar site and wetland of global importance, with the support of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

Thekga’s Dual Assignment
The dual assignment was ambitious: to wage war on the invasive water hyacinth and poverty that had taken hold of the community. But this was not achieved in silos. Thekga called upon the women of Slovo to gather themselves into a formidable female troop, united by a shared purpose and passion for weaving.

The Birth of a Movement
As the women of Slovo came together, they discovered a sense of belonging and empowerment. They formed a strong network of support, weaving a tapestry of connection and solidarity. Under Thekga’s leadership, they embarked on a mission to clean the waters, create sustainable livelihoods, and find purpose in their lives.

The Power of Collaboration
Thekga’s arsenal of wisdom and strategy was bolstered by another young lady, Rendani Nenguda, who provided valuable insights and guidance. The Oppenheimer Generations Research and Conservation (OGRC) leadership played a pivotal role in supporting Thekga’s vision, equipping it with the tools and resources needed to drive change.

The Unseen Heroes
Behind the scenes, a battalion of male soldiers worked tirelessly to support Thekga’s mission. The water hyacinth biofuel battalion. These unsung heroes, played a crucial role in the fight against the invasive species in duality with the transition to clean fuel movement. Their dedication and hard work were instrumental in the success of the project.

A Testament to the Power of Community
As the women of Slovo worked together, they created something truly remarkable. They not only cleaned the waters and created sustainable livelihoods but also forged a sense of community and purpose. Thekgas leadership and vision had brought the women together, but it was their collective effort that had created a movement.

A Legacy of Hope
Today, the women of Slovo continue to forge ahead, their lives in pursuit of transformation through the power of community and collaboration. Thekga’s story serves as a testament to the impact one person can have when driven by a sense of purpose and passion. As we look to the future, we are reminded that even in the most challenging of circumstances, hope and resilience can flourish.
